The Kerkstraat was laid out in 1665 and given its name as the plan was to connect four churches with this street – the Amstelkerk, the Oosterkerk and two other churches that were never built, these being one on the Molenpad and a second by the Weesperstraat. The street was subsequently given different names: Kerkstraat (to the Amstel), Nieuwe Kerkstraat (to the Roetersstraat), Plantage Kerklaan (in the Plantage) and Korte Kerkstraat, that was renamed Tussen Kadijken in 1943. The building is a former ballet school that was built in 1887 under the auspices of the architects J.W. Meijer and G.W. Meijer and commissioned by the Gereformeerde Kerk. The building displays all the traits of the building style in vogue at that time. The strictly classical lines provide the façade with a very regular appearance. Large windows look out openly onto the world. The brickwork façade is adorned at regular intervals with decorative features and window framing. The former ballet school is currently divided into five apartments and an office space, which was done in in 1998. The ballet school is freehold property.
