A 'singel' is a city moat or a boulevard that runs along the outer ring of a city. In Amsterdam, during the second half of the
fifteenth century, a ‘singel’ formed border of the city where the gated walls were built. This particular canal was then called 't Singel or the Stedegracht (currently the Singel, Kloveniersburgwal and the Geldersekade). The Singel as we know it has kept its old name. During the seventeenth century, the city authorities did, however, introduce another name: 'Koningsgracht' but as it didn't stick, it disappeared and Singel remained the name of this canal.
